Prepayment Penalty
A prepayment penalty is a fee paid by a borrower to a bank when a loan is repaid before its maturity. Prepayment penalty fees can be set for specific periods of time, such as the first 12 months of a loan or the entire life of the loan. Additionally, prepayment penalties can be assessed against large principle reductions even if the loan isn't paid off.
