Default
Default occurs when a borrower fails to make principal and or interest payments when they are due. When a loan is in default the lender has the right to make claims against the borrower and any assets securing the loan. In addition and depending on state law, the lender may be able to make claims against other assets a borrower has even it these assets are not securing the loan in default.
